School Council

Our School Council

A School Council is a school-based team made up of the principal, parents, teachers, community members, and—at the secondary level—students. Each school in Massachusetts is required to have a School Council in accordance with state law (Massachusetts General Laws, Chapter 71, Section 59C).

School Councils play an advisory role, working in partnership with the principal to help develop and support the school’s School Improvement Plan. This plan outlines how the school will:

  • Meet the goals of the Massachusetts Education Reform Act
  • Align with district-wide priorities set by the School Committee
  • Support student learning and overall school improvement

By bringing together diverse perspectives, School Councils help ensure that decisions reflect the needs and voices of the entire school community.
