Update: Thursday May 23, 2024

Amazing news!!! An incredible accomplishment!!! The varsity baseball team led by first year head coach Leon Elwell has qualified for the D2 MIAA State Tournament!!!  Behind the gutsy pitching performance of junior ace Christopher  "Figgy" Figueroa and the stellar glove work of freshmen shortstop Mark "Marky" Walsh the Rams defeated GBL foe Revere 8-1 tonight at historic Fraser Field in front of a boisterous home crowd.  The win puts the gritty Rams at 10-8 with 2 regular season games left to play.

So how does a varsity team that graduated 12 seniors and starts 4 or 5 freshmen players on a regular basis win the magical 10 games to qualify?  It all starts with the head coach Leon Elwell...he has the team believing and playing like they can win every single game on their schedule regardless if they only had 3 players returning to this year's team with ANY varsity experience...evident in a walk off win last win week against first place Somerville with senior Yoniel Cabral ripping a single to center field in the bottom of the 7th or even in a 2-0 loss this past Saturday to Middlesex League powerhouse Reading Rockets... this team is playing a solid brand of baseball (bunting, stealing bases, sliding into first base, making plays etc) and proving all the preseason naysayers wrong...

I have been the Athletic Director at my alma mater for the last 17 years and I am most proud of this group of kids and their coaches (Leon Elwell, Chris Tgettis, Jay Rogato, and Pat Whalen)...they have overcome a tremendous amount of adversity...terrible spring weather, countless hours of practicing in the gym, losing tough games, winning tough games, but most importantly staying together as a TEAM and never ever giving up...we have a sign hanging up as every athletic team heads out the back door (D 10) to the bus that reads, "BELIEVE IT CAN BE DONE"...YOU GUYS DID IT !!!

The future is extremely bright for our school's baseball team...Coach Elwell does not believe in bridge years or when I use the word "overachieving"...he sees a group of young kids that love the game of baseball and want to get better every day...come see for yourself!...the Rams are playing rival Lynn English this Friday night at Fraser Field at 7pm in the Doug Mullins Memorial Tournament...Congratulations Coach Elwell and the Varsity Baseball Team you are going dancing in the D2 MIAA State Tournament!!! Proud AD Billy Devin Class of 82   ***the baseball team is joining our boy's volleyball team and the boy's tennis team in the State Tournament...our girl's softball team also has a solid chance of qualifying for the tournament!!!

AS ALWAYS GO RAMS!!!
