Parent’s Notice of Procedural Safeguards

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) directs school districts to provide caregivers of students who receive special education services with the Parent’s Notice of Procedural Safeguards (PNPS) annually. This document helps to provide information on the provisions in special education law that enable caregivers to be involved in educational decisions about their student. It also outlines important information about a caregiver’s right to be involved in planning a student’s special education. As noted on DESE’s website, “procedural safeguards are the specific rules that make sure that you know what the school district is proposing to do (“receive notice”), agree with the school district’s plan (“give parental consent”) and have a range of opportunities for resolving disagreements with the school district (“due process”).”
